Goodby,Mr. Chips

語言點(diǎn):

...he was efficient, ruthless, ambitious, but not, somehow, likeable. He had, admittedly, raised the status of Brookfield as a school, and for the first time in memory there was a longish waiting list. Ralston was a live wire; a fine power transmitter, but you had to beware of him.

beware of 以前聽聽力的時(shí)候,誤聽為be aware of,這兩者相距甚遠(yuǎn)。

如可以說 I will beware 和 You need to beware,但不可說 I beware 或 You beware??梢哉f Beware of thieves,但不可說 They beware of thieves。 ”

例:You should?beware?of bad companions; they may corrupt you.

He felt himself sufficiently protected by age and seniority from the fate of other masters whom Ralston had failed to like.

sufficiently protected by age and seniority

When he had just turned sixty, came Ralston's urbane ultimatum.

nevertheless= that being said?

Since you force me to use plain words, Mr. Chipping, you shall have them.?

這句讓我想起之前那個(gè)If he's looking for trouble, I should certainly let him have it.

Chips stared about him in that book-lined study, startled by the question, wondering why Ralston should have asked it.

要不然還要拆出來一句說“the study is lined with books..."

I find it astonishing that he should be so rude to you.

Abruptly Chips flamed up...

Your methods of teaching are slack and old-fashioned; your personal habits are slovenly...

Chips began, in sheer bewilderment, and then he took up isolated words out of that extraordinary indictment.

“For sheer scale, WeChat seems likely to hold its own.”

之前讀 Shoe Dog的時(shí)候也遇到過,“the sheer volume of...”

I only agreed in sheer desperation.

At last Chips had something tangible that he could tackle.

tackle= to deal with sth difficult.?

And suddenly in a torrent of thoughts too pressing to be put into words, Chips made answer to himself.

a torrent of thoughts, sweep,可以放在一起記,洶涌的想法襲來

... but instead of widening them to form a genuine inclusive democracy of duke and dustman, Ralston was narrowing them to upon the single issue of a fat banking account.

president and plumber、minister and manufacturer

Ralston met these wealthy fellows in London clubs and persuaded them that Brookfield was the coming school, and since they couldn't buy their way into Eton or Harrow, the greedily swallowed the bait.?

buy their way into

They couldn't enter?Eton or Harrow by donating them money.

swallow the bait 吃鉤上鉤

the Govenors are with you to a man.

to a man 一致,毫無例外

例:They answered 'Yes,' to a man.

but a chap like that wants watching.

And at that -- both then and often when he recounted it afterwards -- Chips broke down.

Chips broke down at that(指前面Sir John說的那番話)

break down= to lose control of your feelings and start crying?

break down and cry/weep,break down into tears

語音點(diǎn):

ultimatum /??lt??me?t?m/?
