01 A Ball to Roll Around (2) (散文54篇詳解Day 2)

I believe in life now. I am not so sure that I would have believed in it so deeply, otherwise. I don't mean that I would prefer to go without my eyes. I simply mean that the loss of them made me appreciate the more what I had left.

I believe in life now.

注意用的是“believe in”,而不是“believe”,believe in sth 表示“相信……

I am not so sure / that I would have believed in it so deeply, / otherwise.

I am not so sure + that + 句子,我不能肯定某事

otherwise: 要不然、否則,相當(dāng)于“if not”,跟前面的It occurred to me the other day that I might not have come to love life as I do if I hadn't been blind中的“I hadn't been blind”一樣,只是省略成了“if not”,即otherwise。

I don't mean / that I would prefer to go without my eyes.

I don't mean + that + 句子,我并不是說某事。

prefer to do sth 寧愿做某事,更愿意做某事,相當(dāng)于“want to do sth more”

go without my eyes指“變成盲人”。

I simply mean / that the loss of them made me appreciate the more what I had left.

what I had left,

I lost my sight when I was four years old by falling off a box car in a freight yard in Atlantic City and landing on my head. Now I am thirty-two. I can vaguely remember the brightness of sunshine and what color red is. It would be wonderful to see again, but a calamity can do strange things to people. It occurred to me the other day that I might not have come to love life as I do if I hadn't been blind. I believe in life now. I am not so sure that I would have believed in it so deeply, otherwise. I don't mean that I would prefer to go without my eyes. I simply mean that the loss of them made me appreciate the more what I had left.
