Getting less sleep has become a bad habit for most American kids. According to a new survey by the National Sleep Foundation, 51% of kids aged 10 to 18 go to bed at 10 pm or later on school nights, even though they have to get up early. Last year the Foundation reported that nearly 60% of 7- to 12-year-olds said they felt tired during the day, and 15% said they had fallen asleep at school.
How much sleep you need depends a lot on your age. Babies need a lot of rest: most of them sleep about 18 hours a day! Adults need about eight hours. For most school-age children, ten hours is ideal. But the new National Sleep Foundation survey found that 35% of 10- to 12-year-olds get only seven or eight hours. And guess what almost half of the surveyed kids said they do before bedtime? Watch TV.
“More children are going to bed with TVs on, and there are more opportunities(機會) to stay awake, with more homework, the Internet and the phone,” says Dr. Mary Carskadon, a sleep researcher at Brown University Medical School. She says these activities at bedtime can zxxk get kids all excited and make it hard for them to calm down and sleep. Other experts say part of the problem is chemical. Changing levels of body chemicals called hormones not only make teenagers’ bodies develop adult characteristics, but also make it hard for teenagers to fall asleep before 11 pm.
Because sleepiness is such a problem for teenagers, some school districts have decided to start high school classes later than they used to. Three years ago, schools in Edina, Minnesota, changed the start time from 7:25 am to 8:30 am. Students, parents and teachers are pleased with the results.
分析版
Getting less sleep has become a bad habit for most American kids(getting less sleep是這句話的主語,主干結(jié)構(gòu)是become a habit for sb.,意思是“什么玩意兒成為了某某人的習(xí)慣”。 According to a new survey by the National Sleep Foundation(一看the加上幾個大寫,就知道是一個神秘組織), 51% of kids aged 10 to 18(這里限定了年齡范圍,就需要注意,以備題目中出現(xiàn)超出這個范圍的選項)?go to bed at 10 pm or later on school nights, even though they have to get up early(看來中國的小孩兒和美國的小孩兒一樣,都面臨這個事兒). Last year the Foundation reported that nearly 60% of 7- to 12-year-olds(注意哦,年齡的范圍出現(xiàn)了變化)?said they felt tired during the day, and 15% said they had fallen asleep at school.
How much sleep you need depends a lot on your age(depend a lot on的意思是“很大程度上取決于什么”,并不是完全取決于。 Babies need a lot of rest: most of them sleep about 18 hours a day! Adults need about eight hours. For most school-age children, ten hours is ideal(這里需要注意的是,不同年齡的人對應(yīng)的睡眠時間分別是多少,這里就有可能涉及到細(xì)節(jié)選項). But the new National Sleep Foundation survey found that 35% of 10- to 12-year-olds get only seven or eight hours. And guess what almost half of the surveyed kids(看,放在人的前面作定語,就應(yīng)該使用-ed結(jié)構(gòu)的詞,要是放在物的前面作定語呢?是噠,就是-ing結(jié)構(gòu)的詞)?said they do before bedtime? Watch TV.
“More children are going to bed with TVs on(with TVs on當(dāng)然不是在電視上面,意思是“開著電視”,on就是“開著的”狀態(tài)), and there are more opportunities to stay awake, with more homework, the Internet and the phone,” says Dr. Mary Carskadon, a sleep researcher(這類學(xué)者挺有意思的,專門研究睡覺)?at Brown University Medical School. She says these activities at bedtime can get kids all excited(這里的結(jié)構(gòu)是get sth. done,跟前面的那個-ed放在名詞前面作定語是不一樣的)?and make it hard for them to calm down and sleep(這里最明顯的一個結(jié)構(gòu)是make it + adj. +for sb. + to do sth.,意思是“對某人來說,做什么事情是很怎么樣的”,這里的那個to do sth. Other experts say part of the problem is chemical(這個觀點不是前面那個學(xué)者提出的哦). Changing levels of body chemicals called hormones(hormone是什么? 當(dāng)然里,hormone,拼讀一下就知道,這是“荷爾蒙”)?not only make teenagers’?bodies develop adult characteristics, but also make it hard for teenagers to fall asleep before 11 pm.
Because sleepiness is such a problem for teenagers, some school districts(school district就是“學(xué)區(qū)”,是不是條件反射出來一個“貴”字?)?have decided to start high school classes later than they used to(這里的意思是“把上學(xué)時間推遲到以前的時間之后”,是不是很感人的做法? Three years ago, schools in Edina, Minnesota, changed the start time from 7:25 am to 8:30 am(一推遲就是1個多小時??!). Students, parents and teachers are pleased with the results(如果發(fā)生在我身上,我也會pleased).
