解釋一個(gè)單詞的含義一般是英語詞典編篡者所做的工作，但對已擁有一定詞匯量的學(xué)習(xí)者來說，借助詞典嘗試著為英語單詞下出定義也不失為一個(gè)提高語言輸出能力的有效方法。它的作用主要體現(xiàn)在以下幾個(gè)方面：

一、 更加準(zhǔn)確地掌握單詞的含義

受母語的影響，中國的學(xué)習(xí)者往往會根據(jù)漢語的意思來理解和使用英文單詞，這是造成中式英語的一個(gè)重要原因。通過給單詞下定義以及與詞典中的解釋相對照，我們就可以準(zhǔn)確地理解這些單詞的含義，從而有效地避免中式英語。舉例來說，“社會”一詞在漢語中的詞義比較寬泛，既表示公眾和社會群體，也表示工作環(huán)境，還可以表示社會活動等等，但在英語中，society的詞義僅與公眾相關(guān)聯(lián)，在朗文高級詞典中，它的基礎(chǔ)詞義是：

People in general, considered in relation to the structure of laws, organizations etc. that makes it possible for them to live together.

意思是“受法律秩序約束，隸屬于一定組織機(jī)構(gòu)，并生活在一起的公眾群體”。這個(gè)解釋很明確地將社會定義為“公眾群體”，與環(huán)境、活動等無關(guān)，所以，了解了這層意思之后，我們就能避免說出step into the society, touch society, find a part-time job in the society等等諸如此類的中式英語。

二、 進(jìn)一步加深對基礎(chǔ)詞匯的理解

英語詞典中用來對單詞進(jìn)行釋義的大多是在口語和書面語中最常用的基礎(chǔ)詞匯，我們在做此項(xiàng)練習(xí)的時(shí)候也要學(xué)會用最簡單的詞匯來解釋相對復(fù)雜的單詞。由于基礎(chǔ)詞匯的使用頻率比較高，同一個(gè)詞匯可能會用于很多不同單詞的解釋，在這個(gè)過程中，我們就會加深對這個(gè)詞的理解，也會逐漸熟悉到它在不同語境中的用法。請看下面從牛津初級詞典中摘抄出來的例子：

1. Border: a line between two countries

2. Comb: a flat piece of metal or plastic with a line of thin parts like teeth. You use it to makeyour hair tidy.

3. Diameter: a straight line that across a circle

4. Equator: the line on maps around the middle of the world

5. Frown: move your eyebrows together to make lines on your forehead. You frown when your are worried, angry or thinking hard.

6. Horizon: the line between the earth or sea and the sky

以上釋義中都有一個(gè)單詞line, 分別用來解釋“邊境”，“梳子”，“直徑”，“赤道”，“皺眉”，“地平線”，同時(shí)也說明line這個(gè)詞不單單是指漢語中的“一條線”，還可以用在以上語境當(dāng)分別表示“一排東西”“皺紋”“虛線”“實(shí)線”等等，擴(kuò)展了line的詞義與用法。

再請看下面的例子：

以上釋義中都有mark這個(gè)詞，分別用來解釋“淤青”，“清潔”，“秤”， 而mark在其中也扮演著不同的角色，分別解釋為“傷痕”，“污跡”以及“刻度”等等。如此以來，我們就能體會到mark的不同用法了。

三、 找到替代用詞，提高說英語的流利程度

由于單詞釋義大多會采用詞義更加寬泛或與原單詞意義相近的詞匯，所以在一定程度上，用于釋義的單詞可以直接代替被釋義的單詞而用到句子當(dāng)中，從而避免說話時(shí)因?yàn)橥浟诉@個(gè)單詞而中斷。請看以下單詞：

Conversation

釋義：an informal talk in which people exchange news, feelings, and thoughts

例句：He can’t hold a conversation for more than five minutes without mentioning his new book.

跟別人聊天的時(shí)候，不到5分鐘他就要提一提他的新書。

Thesis

釋義：a long piece of writing about a particular subject that you do as part of an advanced university degree

例句：He is writing his master’s thesis. 他在寫他的碩士論文

Attach

釋義: to connect one object to another

例句：Attach a bell to the cat’s collar to warn birds. 在貓脖子上系個(gè)鈴鐺以警示鳥兒們

Request

釋義: to ask for something politely or formally

例句：To request more information, please call our toll free number. 更多信息，請致電我們的免費(fèi)電話

Maintain

釋義: keep

例句：Our main wish is to help maintain world peace 我們的心愿就是幫助維護(hù)世界和平

Transfer

釋義: to move money from the control of one account or institution to another

例句：I need to transfer some money from my savings account to my checking account. 我要從我的儲蓄帳戶里轉(zhuǎn)些錢到我的支票帳戶
