Troubleshooting: common mistakes to avoid

It is worth checking the following list as you develop your dissertation, to make sure you avoid these

common errors and therefore also avoid losing marks. These are some of the most common mistakes

commented on by the examiners:

? You do not include a clearly defined research question

? You do not identify a problem or a space in the existing literature that you will fill with your study

? Describing the literature, rather than evaluating, analysing and critiquing it

? Using a method that you don’t understand or cannot practically implement in the time available

? You do not address the limitations of the study

? You do not justify your choice of sample in the context of your research question (of texts,

interviewees, other data sources)

? Describing your results, rather than analysing them in terms of the literature that you have used to

frame the study

? Providing ‘recommendations’ for practitioners or industries – this is not the main job of an academic

dissertation (though you may include them as one outcome of the study)

? You do not address the ethical implications of your research and fail to attach the MLERF Ethics

Form as an Appendix in your completed dissertation

? You do not explain how your work has added to the existing body of academic knowledge in the

area

? You do not present your in-text citations and Reference List in Leeds Harvard style
