每個人的語言儲備庫里,都有一個“舒適區(qū)”(comfort zone) 里面貯藏著平時用慣的一批語匯,某種句型,某種文風。它的好處是:容易形成自己獨特的風格。短處是:缺乏新意,容易讓人產(chǎn)生似曾相識的審美疲勞。
英語中有若干平時不甚常用的詞匯,可以在適當?shù)臅r候用于替換同義的普通詞匯,頓時有畫龍點睛之效,讓人耳目一新。舉例如下:
1. Albeit(可取代though, even though):
They’re an attempt, albeit through humor, to bring at least some semblance of order to a world gone haywire.
Albeit ?difficult, the job is getting done.
2. Notwithstanding(可取代despite, in spite of):
Notwithstanding some major financial problems, the school has had a successful year.
They went ahead, public opposition notwithstanding.
Hence(可取代resulting in, therefore ?from now):
We suspect they are trying to hide something, hence the need for an independent inquiry.
The sports meet will be held three days hence.
Inter alia(可取代among others):
He stated, inter alia, that international cooperation and coordination for implementation are major features of the WHO FCTC.
Vice versa(可取代or the other way round):
A man of high birth may be of low worth and vice versa.
